End grain cutting boards are beautiful and durable, but they do need proper care to stay in top condition. Here's a complete guide:
🧼 After Each Use (Daily Care) • Wash immediately after use with mild dish soap and warm (not hot) water. • Wipe clean using a soft sponge or cloth — avoid soaking the board or putting it in the dishwasher. • Dry thoroughly with a towel and then let it stand upright to air-dry completely.
🧴 Weekly or Biweekly Maintenance (Oiling) • Apply food-grade mineral oil or board oil liberally over the entire surface — top, bottom, and sides. • Let it absorb for at least 20–30 minutes (or overnight for dry boards). • Wipe off excess oil with a clean cloth.
💡 This keeps the wood hydrated, prevents cracking, and enhances the grain.
🧈 Monthly or As Needed (Conditioning) Use a board butter (a blend of mineral oil and beeswax or carnauba wax): • Apply a thin, even coat over the entire board. • Let it sit for several hours (or overnight). • Buff with a soft cloth until the surface feels smooth and slightly glossy.
